United Nations Security Council members voted in favour to a US resolution ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his White House visit the following week.

He became transitional president after leading a revolutionary movement that drove out the former president in the final month of 2024, concluding 13 years of civil war.

The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.

Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions as the leader of the Islamist group the HTS movement, previously associated with al-Qaeda. America delisted HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations during July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.

The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the sanctions, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and supportive states for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

President Sharaa's presidential meeting on Monday follows American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" working toward stability to the previously divided state.

Following their discussion, the US president stated Sharaa had "a real shot at pulling it together".

The pair met initially in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through the region.

Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".

His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country before he cut connections during 2016.

Previous US Visit

This week's diplomatic engagement is not his initial visit to the US in the current year. This past fall, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the global assembly in New York after approximately sixty years.

Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "regaining its deserved status across international circles" and demonstrated unity toward Gaza's residents.
